PM Modi Unveils Vizhinjam Seaport in Kerala: India’s First Transshipment Hub Set to Transform Maritime Trade

adminBy adminMay 2, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today officially inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, marking a historic moment in India’s maritime history. Touted as the country’s first full-fledged transshipment hub, Vizhinjam is expected to drastically boost India’s position in global shipping and reduce its dependence on foreign ports for cargo transshipment.

A Strategic Maritime Milestone

Located just 10 nautical miles from the busy international shipping route in the Indian Ocean, Vizhinjam is strategically positioned to attract global cargo carriers. The port’s natural depth of over 20 meters allows it to accommodate some of the world’s largest container ships, placing it on par with international transshipment giants like Singapore and Colombo.

“This is not just the launch of a port, but the start of a new chapter in India’s maritime capability,” PM Modi said during the inauguration ceremony. “Vizhinjam will not only propel Kerala into a global logistics hub but will also reduce logistics costs and improve export competitiveness for our industries.”

Key Features of the Vizhinjam Port:

  • Deep-Draft Capacity: Natural draft of 20+ meters allows handling of Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs).

  • Automated Terminal Operations: Equipped with state-of-the-art cranes and AI-powered logistics management systems.

  • First-Phase Capacity: Designed to handle 1 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), with plans to scale up to 6.2 million TEUs.

  • Green Port Design: Incorporates sustainable practices, including solar energy usage and minimal dredging.

Boost to ‘Make in India’ and Export Strategy

The Vizhinjam Port is a major boost to India’s ambition of becoming a global manufacturing and export hub under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Until now, nearly 75% of India’s transshipment cargo was routed through foreign ports such as Colombo, Singapore, and Dubai. With Vizhinjam operational, this dependency is expected to decline significantly, saving both time and costs.

Public-Private Partnership Model

Developed by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd. in collaboration with the Government of Kerala, the Vizhinjam Seaport is a model for successful public-private partnership. The first phase alone saw an investment of over ₹7,500 crore. Future expansion phases will include logistics parks, warehousing zones, and rail-road connectivity.

Regional Impact and Employment

Apart from its national strategic importance, the port is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, stimulate local economies, and improve connectivity in southern India. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who shared the dais with PM Modi, hailed the port as a “proud moment for Kerala” and a “symbol of cooperative federalism.”

Looking Ahead

As India eyes a larger role in global maritime trade, the Vizhinjam International Seaport is poised to play a transformative role. With its advanced capabilities, strategic location, and commitment to sustainability, Vizhinjam could soon become a preferred destination for cargo transshipment across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

“With Vizhinjam, India enters the elite league of global maritime leaders,” PM Modi concluded. “It is a beacon of our economic potential and our vision for a self-reliant Bharat.”
